Next New Media

It is quite difficult to imagine a new type of new media since it seems as though everything anyone could think of has already been brought to life. However, there is always room for improvement, and I believe the current generation of young adults and college students could benefit from a technology which helps in the simple part of a person's daily life: cooking. This new form of technology would combine the use of a mobile device (or any device that could connect to the internet), and the supply of ingredients already present in one's home. By keeping track of what an individual has in their kitchen, this application could suggest different recipes they could cook. The recipes would be pulled from the internet, and any missing ingredients would be indicated and priced using the offers in the user's preferred supermarket. A community aspect would also be included, as users would be able to connect to each other, whether they be friends or family, to create meals together.

Wiki So Far

At the moment I have not physically contributed to the class wiki page, however I have instead been preparing by looking through various pages that interest me to see if there is any way I could contribute before deciding to create a whole new page. I have noticed that there is an opportunity to further develop the Toys R Us section under the "Toys" page, as well as updating/adding more recent content to company sections including Starbucks. There are also several sections in which the photos could be better formatted, so the reader can read the entry as well as see the graphic provided. In the meantime I am also putting together some content relevant to my minor in order to create a new "Philosophy" page. I am doing so by going back to past course resources in order to get general information to possibly create a solid foundation for this new content area to our class wiki.

P2P

As more data is created and made available on the internet, and as more users take advantage of this technology, so does the practice of file sharing. Put simply, file sharing is the copying/distributing or offering access to resources and digital material through a variety of channels. File sharing can be achieved by several methods, including the use of private networks or just external storage devices, and the types of files can range from graphics, music, books, or complete software products.  The P2P method of file sharing is the most prominent yet, according to techopedia, the most controversial way of sharing files online. P2P, or Peer-to-Peer, file sharing is a process in which digital files such as the ones mentioned above are distributed directly between two peers through P2P network. This distribution is done without monetary charges, which therefore causes the creators of that content to lose a considerable amount of profit. According to the New York Times, piracy through

Privacy

With the introduction of new media comes the concern for the privacy of all those involved. Since the foundation of new media is communication and collaboration, it is natural that users of platforms involved in new media use these sites such as Twitter and Facebook post extensions of themselves. However, some individuals post without the idea of public posts in mind, and some questionable content could be used against them in the future when they least expect it. For example, many institutions of higher education take social media accounts into consideration. In June of this year, Harvard University revoked 10 students' acceptances for their involvement in an inappropriate group on Facebook, according to Inside Higher Ed. Advice for Baruch College

There are so many different ways that Baruch College could use new media for self-improvement and higher efficiency. For starters, the school has many platforms which were created to improve communication and effectiveness for students and clubs in order to increase on-campus engagement. MyBaruch is an application that in theory should be every Baruch student's go-to for up to date information on events, status of technology, etc., however it is barely utilized. In my new role I would make this application a widespread platform all students would frequent to not only see a calendar of student life, career center, and club events, but also statuses on wait times at academic advisement, study room availability, and BCTC statuses. New media would also be incredibly helpful for registration, as the CUNYFirst system is somewhat outdated and simply annoying to use.
